ABSTRACT

The negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health have been widely reported, but less is known about how the impact of COVID-19 on others in one's social circle shapes these high distress levels. This study examines associations between social COVID-19 exposure-knowing someone who had a COVID-19 infection-and psychological functioning, as well as whether socio-demographic factors moderate these relationships. In June 2020, respondents (N = 343) from clinics in Tampa, Florida, U.S.A. reported whether they had social COVID-19 exposure, anxiety, depression, and stress, and other COVID-19-related concerns. Social COVID-19 exposure was associated with increased anxiety, stress, and concerns about a family member getting sick, and concerns about drinking and substance use. Several associations between exposure and psychological functioning were stronger in women, younger people, and people with lower income, implying these groups face elevated psychological risks due to the pandemic, and should be prioritized in mental health recovery efforts.

ABSTRACT

According to the smoke detector and functional flexibility principles of human behavioral immune system (BIS), the exposure to COVID-19 cues could motivate vaccine uptake. Using the tool of Google Trends, we tested that coronavirus-related searches-which assessed natural exposure to COVID-19 cues-would positively predict actual vaccination rates. As expected, coronavirus-related searches positively and significantly predicted vaccination rates in the United States (Study 1a) and across the globe (Study 2a) after accounting for a range of covariates. The stationary time series analyses with covariates and autocorrelation structure of the dependent variable confirmed that more coronavirus-related searches compared with last week indicated increases in vaccination rates compared with last week in the United States (Study 1b) and across the globe (Study 2b). With real-time web search data, psychological scientists could test their research questions in real-life settings and at a large scale to expand the ecological validity and generalizability of the findings.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis paper aims to explore the extent to which global reporting initiative (GRI) standards reflect the material concerns of stakeholders in developing countries, with particular reference to Latin America.Design/methodology/approachThe main dataset was a sample of 120 media articles that discussed corporate conduct related to COVID-19 from both developing (Chile, Mexico and Peru) and developed (Australia, UK and the USA) countries. Concerns evident from those articles were compared and then mapped to applicable GRI standards to identify relevant disclosures and gaps. Findings were triangulated by drawing on two additional datasets: Latin American GRI-related academic literature (in Spanish) and submissions to GRI standards.FindingsMedia analysis reveals significant differences between developing and developed country concerns, as well as gaps in GRI disclosure requirements in relation to customers, labour standards and corporate interactions with non-government organisations and governments. Analysis of Latin American literature corroborates the concerns raised in media articles regarding employment. Additionally, it points out country-specific issues and calls for increased reporting of corruption. Analysis of the GRI standards development process reveals marked underrepresentation of developing countries, which may contribute to the observed deficiencies in the GRI standards.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to the (surprisingly rare) research concerning the quality of GRI standards and responds to calls for greater attention to developing countries in the SEA literature by showing that GRI standards may not fully meet the needs of users in the developing country context of Latin America. The paper also contributes to practice via specific recommendations for improvement to GRI standards and the standard-setting process and provides a summary of the key findings from Spanish-language Latin American literature.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: There is a paucity of evidence on the provision of trauma-informed care among nurses and midwives during the pandemic.Therefore, this online survey of Turkish nurses and midwives aimed to: describe reported maternal concerns and anxieties during the COVID-19 pandemic; and explore aspects of trauma-informed care for perinatal women during the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e., nurses' and midwives' knowledge, opinions, perceived competence, current practices, and implementation barriers). DESIGN: A cross-sectional descriptive survey design. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A web-based survey conducted between June 2021 to December 2021. A total of 102 nurses and midwives comprised the final sample of this study. FINDINGS: The safety of COVID-19 vaccine was both the most common maternal concern (73%) and the most frequently noted maternal source of anxiety (79%) reported to nurses and midwives by perinatal women. Most nurses and midwives were knowledgeable of, held favorable opinion about, and perceived moderate competence in trauma-informed care. The most frequently provided practice was encouraging mothers to make use of their own social support system (82%). Time constrains and lack of resources were perceived as somewhat to significant barriers to providing trauma-informed care during the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: Access to correct information related to COVID-19 vaccination is necessary to reduce maternal anxiety. Since perinatal nurses and midwives had favorable opinions concerning implementing trauma-informed care, successful strategies for mitigating the implementation barriers are essential to facilitate the provision of trauma-informed care during the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic elicited a lot of concerns among citizens, thereby potentially compromising their well-being. This study sought to examine the role of individuals' emotion regulation styles (i.e., emotional dysregulation, emotional suppression, and emotional integration) in handling these concerns and their experiences of well-being (i.e., satisfaction with life and sleep quality) and ill-being (i.e., anxiety and depressive symptoms). The study had a unique 10-wave longitudinal design (N = 986; Mage  = 41.28; 76% female) and was conducted during the outbreak of the pandemic in March-May 2020. Multilevel analyses showed, first, that weekly variation in COVID-19 related concerns related negatively to weekly variation in well-being and positively to weekly variation in ill-being. Second, at the between-person level, emotional dysregulation and suppression related positively to between-person vulnerability in ill-being and lower well-being (across all waves). Third, between-person differences in emotional dysregulation amplified the strength of the within-person association between concerns and depressive complaints and lowered life satisfaction. Unexpectedly, integrative emotion regulation amplified the strength of the within-person association between concerns and anxiety. The discussion focuses on the critical role of emotion regulation in handling the uncertainty elicited by the pandemic and provides directions for further research.

ABSTRACT

Purpose This study aimed to examine the impact of COVID-19 concerns on employees' well-being, considering workplace stress, aggression, and emotional outcomes, such as emotional engagement, emotional exhaustion, and negative emotional reactions. This study also considers the moderating role of technostress between workplace stress and aggression, which has been overlooked in previous studies. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from frontline hotel employees in Turkey. Online data were collected through Amazon Mechanical Turk services. A total of 250 questionnaires were distributed. Nevertheless, only 204 questionnaires with valid responses were usable for analysis through partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings The analytical findings showed that COVID-19 concerns (financial, social gaze, and technological) cause workplace stress, resulting in aggression. Aggression subsequently affects the employees' emotional outcomes, impacting their emotional well-being. Furthermore, the results showed that technostress insignificantly moderates workplace stress and aggression. Practical implications This study provides valuable practical implications to the hotels' top management, practitioners, and policymakers to provide preventive measures to employees, such as wearing masks and maintaining distance. Hotel practitioners should limit employees' direct contact with customers and reduce factors that result in overall financial losses and create financial stress for employees. Originality/value The current study examined the relationships between the study's variables in Turkey's hotel industry context by employing the conservation of resources (COR) theory. The study investigated stress and aggression phenomena, their impact on employees' emotional responses, and ultimately their influence on the employees' well-being.

ABSTRACT

We examined COVID-19 concerns, vaccine acceptance, and trusted sources of information among patients in a safety-net health system in Louisiana. The participants were surveyed via structured telephone interviews over nine months in 2021. Of 204 adult participants, 65% were female, 52% were Black, 44.6% were White, and 46.5% were rural residents. The mean age was 53 years. The participants viewed COVID-19 as a serious public health threat (8.6 on 10-point scale). Black adults were more likely to perceive the virus as a threat than White adults (9.4 vs. 7.6 p < 0.0001), urban residents more than rural (9.0 vs. 8.2 p = 0.02), females more than males (8.9 vs. 8.1 p = 0.03). The majority (66.7%) had gotten the COVID-19 vaccine, with females being more likely than males (74.7 vs. 54.5% p = 0.02). There was no difference by race or rural residence. Overall, participants reported that physicians were the most trusted source of COVID-19 vaccine information (77.6%); followed by the CDC/FDA (50.5%), State Department of Health (41.4%), pharmacists (37.1%), nurses (36.7%); only 3.8% trusted social media. All sources were more trusted among black adults than White adults except family and social media. These findings could help inform efforts to design trustworthy public health messaging and clinical communication about the virus and vaccines.

ABSTRACT

Would the life-threatening pandemic impact pro-environmental behavior? This study demonstrates the effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on pro-environmental product consumption. Two experimental studies manipulated individuals' COVID-19 concerns and the presence/absence of pro-environmental prompts. In study 1, we found that consumers indicated lower purchase intention for a product with the environmental prompts when recalling COVID-19 concerns compared to normal situations. In study 2, we disentangled egoistic COVID-19 concerns (e.g., concerns about disadvantages to individuals' work and finances) from altruistic COVID-19 concerns (e.g., concerns about damage to the country's economy) and investigated the effects of both these concerns on pro-environmental product consumption. The results of study 2 revealed that consumers reported an increased purchase intention toward the e-prompt products, which manipulated altruistic COVID-19 concerns. However, the presence/absence of e-prompt products did not affect consumers' purchase intentions when recalling egoistic COVID-19 concerns. Concerns regarding environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) issues mediated the interaction effect between the type of COVID-19 concerns and the presence/absence of e-prompts for the products.
